Titmice depend upon the emergence of caterpillars when the oak leaves open. Climate change seems to be producing warmer springs, and there is a risk that the caterpillars hatch before the young titmice hatch. This means there is less food to feed the baby birds. Garden bird feeders can provide valuable food when caterpillars are scarce. There are concerns that the widespread use of bird feeders is spreading disease between birds visiting the feeders. If bird feeders are used, it is important that they are kept clean and disease-free.
