The felling of the trees presents a practical problem and new opportunities. The felled branches (“brash”) need to be disposed of; burning the wood releases carbon dioxide into the air and is not sustainable. Using the branches to make dead hedges, on the other hand, helps to protect children and dogs from falling into the muddy pond, and provides a sustainable way of using some of the brash.

If the UN sustainability goals are to have any value, it will because they are enacted at every level of society, especially on the woodland floor.

Sustainable development—is about using the Earth’s resources, like water, trees, and energy, in a way that doesn’t harm the planet and ensures there’s enough for future generations too.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 is all about protecting life on land. This means looking after forests, stopping animals from losing their homes, and making sure plants and wildlife can thrive.
