how organisms affect, and are affected by, their environment,

Science National Curriculum, KS3

Be aware that it is difficult to prove that organisms are leaving Nowhere Wood because of climate change.

the environment

Our field records show that some species are less common in Nowhere Wood than they used to be and some seem to have disappeared altogether.

It is difficult, as this story explores, to be sure that this is due to the effects of climate change.

Suggested answers to the questions

  1. Bee hotels are sometimes used as a way to help encourage solitary bees to breed and survive. Learn how to do this here.
  2. Imagine what a world would look like without insects.  Does it matter if we lose our insects?

A world without insects would face catastrophic ecological and economic consequences. Insects are essential for pollination, nutrient cycling, pest control, and serving as primary food sources for numerous species. Without pollinators like bees, butterflies, and beetles, agriculture would collapse, severely impacting global food security, particularly for fruit, vegetable, and nut production. This would necessitate inefficient, costly human-led pollination methods, still unable to match the scale and efficacy of natural systems.
