November is the season for remembrance, remembering the contributions of those who are unseen and often forgotten. Falling poppy petals become the soldiers who fell in the many wars, protecting the health and fortune of their country.

In the wood and the park, falling leaves and apples soon disappear beneath the earth, reminding us of those creatures whose life cycles benefit themselves and, indirectly, ourselves.

Removing leaves from our gardens might make it look tidier, but it deprives these soil organisms of a major source of food. This will affect the quality of our soil next year, and force us to add artificial fertilisers to make up for the deficit. In the end, the structure of the soil will be poorer, without the humus that these organisms make.
